The world would be a better place if happiness was a permanent thing. How rosy would it have been if whatever gave us happiness continued to give us happiness. After all, who likes to be sad?
What we fail to understand is that what we "think" of as happiness is actually just "sadness" in disguise!
You think you just -
became rich
found your soulmate
got married
had children
succeeded at work place
bought your dream car
bought your dream dress
achieved your goal
And you found happiness? That's just -
fear of losing wealth
fear of losing your soulmate
responsibility of their family
responsibility of their happiness
getting bored of that car
getting bored of that dress
looking for new goals
in disguise!
Earthlings did not settle even after reaching the moon, then what is the meaning of other things giving us happiness?
Do we stop doing all this and and can then achieve happiness? No. Permanent happiness calls for a skill called detachment. One can conquer the world of happiness by detaching oneself from the act. Sadness follows happiness like a shadow when we get too attached to the doings of daily life.
If one can master the art of detachment-with-doing, one can certainly attain permanent happiness. You achieve happiness from the doing (materialistic or spiritual) and move on to the next without being attached to the previous one. That way you're not dependent on one particular thing or person for your happiness.
Happiness is a relative phenomenon. What we think might be the meaning of happiness might not be the same for another person. Happiness is a conscious decision. No outer factor can make you happy.
Yes, they can but only if you have it at your disposal all the time. If shopping makes you happy, keep shopping all day. It is impossible that it will keep you happy with the same magnitude as it did when you first shopped. Eventually, it will become a drudgery.
What is the whole drama around happiness, then?
It is nothing. There's no one definition of happiness. Only, temporary or permanent. Temporary happiness can be achieved in a trillion ways. Permanent has no way.
Acceptance of the things as they are is permanent happiness. Things change, situations change and so do people. Since nothing is permanent, relying on anything or anyone temporary for your happiness is not a good idea. Unless you are looking for temporary happiness.
For permanent one, look within. It is always there. Some people also call it contentment.
